Leaf blight resistance in rice: a review of breeding and biotechnology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) is the most devastating disease of rice. This disease can reduce grain production by 20-50% . Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, the causal agent of bacterial leaf blight (BLB) of rice was characterized through pathogenecity and biochemical assays. The development of resistant cultivars has been the most effective and economical strategy to control bacterial leaf blight (BB) disease of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). Molecular markers have made it possible to identify and pyramid valuable genes of agronomic importance in resistance rice breeding. However, new powerful tools such as transgenics have been introduced to make a significant impact. The informed deployment of major, race-specific and partial, race-nonspecific resistance, either by conventional breeding or transgenic approaches, will enable the production of crop varieties with effective resistance without impacting on other agronomically important crop traits. Here, we review these recent advances and progress towards the ultimate goal of developing disease-resistant crops. The purpose of this minireview is to consolidate the existing knowledge about bacterial leaf blight in rice and the progress made both in conventional as well as in molecular dimensions of breeding together with potential findings and constraints.

Rice bacterial blight caused by Xanthamonos oryzae pv. oryzae is one of the most destructive bacterial diseases of rice in some areas of rice cultivation in the world, especially in the tropics of Asia. The low efficiency of disease management methods, especially chemical methods, has led to more research on recognizing resistant cultivars and understanding resistance mechanisms through the stu...

SUMMARY Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola cause bacterial blight and bacterial leaf streak of rice (Oryza sativa), which constrain production of this staple crop in much of Asia and parts of Africa. Tremendous progress has been made in characterizing the diseases and breeding for resistance. X. oryzae pv. oryzae causes bacterial blight by invading the vascular t...

Variability in the cultivated germplasm for economic traits such as resistance to rice tungro virus, sheathblight, yellow stem borer, drought and salt tolerance is limited. This necessitated search for the genes in secondary and tertiary gene pool of genus Oryza. Fortunately, wild species are an important reservoir ofuseful genes for resistance to major disease, pest and tolerance t...

Resistance gene analog polymorphism (RGAP) markers linked to Fusarium head blight resistance (FHB) and co-localize with Qfhs.ndsu-3BS were identified using F3 plants and F3:5 lines derived from a ‘Wangshuibai’ (resistant) / ‘Seri82’ (susceptible) cross. The mapping populations were genotyped using 50 degenerate primers designed based on the known R genes. Out of the 50 designed primer combinati...
